Dr Zahinoor Ismail

Dr. Zahinoor Ismail brings extensive expertise in neuropsychiatry, with a focus on brain health, aging, and dementia. As a Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry, Clinical Neurosciences, and Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary, his work bridges clinical care, research, and education to improve outcomes for individuals living with cognitive disorders.
Dr. Ismail is internationally recognized for his research on the early identification of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, with a particular focus on neuropsychiatric symptoms such as depression, apathy, and mild behavioral impairment. His work has advanced how dementia is detected and understood, helping to support earlier intervention and more personalized care.
In collaboration with Gordie Howe CARES, Dr. Ismail leads the CAN-PROTECT study, an important research initiative focused on improving early identification and intervention in dementia. This work reflects a shared commitment to advancing knowledge, supporting caregivers, and enhancing care for those impacted by cognitive decline.
